100 Push-Ups a Day for 30 Days: Results and Plan

Short answer: 100 push-ups a day for 30 days is a realistic challenge if you can already do about 35 strict push-ups in a row. Split the 100 into sets you can finish with a few reps in reserve, spread them across the day, and plan rest. Expect more reps, better push-up endurance and some strength gains in a month. Expect little visible muscle change, because 30 days is short and 100 easy reps stop being a hard stimulus fast. If you can't do 35 yet, build up to 100 instead of forcing it. GLADIUS was built for exactly this: the 100 push-ups a day for 30 days challenge is in the app, the camera counts only full reps, and your daily target grows 1% each day you hit it.

Take the 100-a-day challenge with proof. GLADIUS is free on iPhone. Start with the 60-second test, then let the camera count every full rep until you hit 100.

Key takeaways

  • 100 a day is about two to three times the max of a man who can do 35 to 50 in a row. Below that, build up first.
  • Never do 100 as one ugly set. Use sets you can finish cleanly: 4 × 25, 5 × 20 or 10 × 10, spread over the day.
  • In short training studies, push-ups produced strength gains comparable to the bench press when the effort was matched. Effort is the key word.
  • After 30 days, judge yourself by a retest, not by a before-and-after photo. Muscle size takes longer.
  • Plan rest days. Daily volume at the same angle is hard on elbows, wrists and shoulders.
  • GLADIUS turns the challenge into a daily contract: proven reps, a streak, XP, ranks and a trophy at the end.

"I did 100 push-ups a day for 30 days" is one of the most watched formats on YouTube. Some men end the month stronger. Others quit on day 9 with sore elbows. The difference is rarely willpower. It is whether the challenge matched their level, and whether the reps were real.

Is 100 push-ups a day a good idea?

For most healthy men who already train, yes, as long as the number fits you. Our rule of thumb, explained in how many push-ups should I do a day, is a daily total of roughly two to three times your max set, spread across the day. Run that rule backward and 100 a day fits a man whose max is somewhere around 35 to 50.

Your max in one set Is 100 a day right for you? What to do
0–9 Not yet Incline push-ups and the 30-day challenge first
10–34 Too much to start Start at 2–3 × your max and build up (plan below)
35–49 Yes 100 a day in 4 to 5 clean sets
50+ Yes, and it will get easy 100 a day in 2 to 3 sets, then make it harder

Not sure where you stand? Test yourself and compare your score with our push-up test by age chart. In GLADIUS, a 60-second test sets your first target and the camera only counts full reps. 100 half reps is not the same challenge as 100 real ones.

How to split 100 push-ups a day

The goal is 100 clean reps, not 100 reps any way you can. Pick a split where every set ends with two or three reps still in the tank. Failure is for test days.

  • Max 35–49: 4 sets of 25, or 5 sets of 20. Morning, lunch, afternoon, evening.
  • Max 50+: 2 sets of 50, or 3 sets of about 35.
  • Busy day: 10 sets of 10, one every hour or every time you get up from your desk.

Attach each set to something you already do every day: waking up, lunch, shower, bed. GLADIUS also has five modes you can mix into the week: 60-second sprint, 100 reps against the clock, pyramid, no-break and free session.

Can't do 100 a day yet? Build up to it

If your max is under 35, start at two to three times your max and add a little every time you succeed. A sudden jump from 40 a day to 100 is how elbows get angry and challenges die.

This is exactly how GLADIUS works. Your first daily target comes from your 60-second test, and it grows 1% each day you hit it. That sounds small. It compounds: starting from 60 a day, you reach 100 a day after about 52 days of hitting your target. Starting from 50, it takes about 70. No guessing, no jumps, and every rep along the way counted by the camera.

Prefer a fixed month? Our 30-day push-up challenge has a day-by-day table with three levels; finish the advanced track and 100 a day is your next step.

100 push-ups a day for 30 days: what results to expect

More reps and more strength

Short studies show that push-ups can build real strength. In a 5-week trial, trained young adults who did push-ups loaded with elastic bands at a muscle activity level matched to a 6-rep max bench press gained strength comparable to a bench press group.
Source: Calatayud J et al., Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2015;29(1):246–253.

In another study, untrained men did push-ups set up to match a load of 40% of their bench press max, twice a week for 8 weeks. Push-ups were comparably effective to the bench press for both muscle growth and strength gain over that period.
Source: Kikuchi N, Nakazato K, Journal of Exercise Science & Fitness, 2017;15(1):37–42.

And in a 4-week study of moderately trained young men, progressive push-up variations three times a week improved bench press one-rep max, while muscle thickness did not change significantly in that short window.
Source: Kotarsky CJ et al., Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2018;32(3):651–659.

Why visible muscle is the slow part

In all three studies the push-ups were hard: loaded, matched to a real load, or progressed. If your max is 60, a set of 25 is easy work, and easy work stops driving change. A meta-analysis on training volume found that more weekly sets were associated with greater muscle growth, with 10 or more sets per muscle per week outperforming fewer than 5, but those were sets with real effort.
Source: Schoenfeld BJ, Ogborn D, Krieger JW, Journal of Sports Sciences, 2017;35(11):1073–1082.

So be skeptical of dramatic 30-day before-and-after photos. A month of 100 a day shows up first on your retest, and in the fact that you kept your word for 30 days.

Push-up capacity is a good number to own

In a cohort study of 1,104 male firefighters followed for about 10 years, men who could do more than 40 push-ups at baseline had far fewer cardiovascular events than men who could do fewer than 10. This was an association in active, middle-aged men, with few events overall. It does not show that doing push-ups prevents heart disease.

The risks: what goes wrong with 100 a day

  1. Same angle, every day. Rotate hand width and do some incline or decline sets to spread the stress.
  2. Sloppy reps. Keep sets short enough to stay clean.
  3. No rest. Soreness that does not fade overnight is a signal. Take a full rest day with zero push-ups. In GLADIUS, a day without a single push-up counts as rest, you can take up to 2 rest days in any rolling 7 days, and a rest day does not raise your streak.
  4. Pain. Sharp pain in the shoulder, elbow or wrist means stop, not push through.
  5. Push-ups only. Push-ups train chest, shoulders, triceps and core. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans ask adults for muscle-strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups on two or more days a week, plus 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week. Add pulling, legs and walking.

After 30 days: make it harder, not longer

When 100 a day feels easy, make each rep harder instead of adding easy ones: lower in three seconds, pause at the bottom, elevate your feet, or swap part of the volume for a weekly no-break set. The American College of Sports Medicine's 2026 resistance training position stand reinforces the same simple message: consistency matters more than finding a "perfect" program, and bodyweight training brings real benefits.

And keep the habit alive. The mental side of showing up every day is what we cover in what daily push-ups do to your brain.

Why GLADIUS is the best way to do 100 push-ups a day

A paper checklist trusts you to count honestly at 11 p.m. GLADIUS doesn't have to. The camera counts every rep and only full reps, so your 100 is a real 100. The 100 push-ups a day for 30 days challenge sits in the app with trophies to earn. You earn XP on every push-up and climb seven ranks, from TIRO to GLADIUS. Your streak shows whether you kept your word. The Arena ranks your records against other men, and the Duo mode lets you hold one streak with a friend, so someone notices when you skip. If you want to know why a camera count beats tapping a button, read our guide to the push-up counter app.

100 a day. 30 days. Every rep proven.
Take the 60-second test, start the challenge and build a streak you can't fake. GLADIUS is free on iPhone (iOS 15.1+), Android coming soon.

FAQ

What happens if you do 100 push-ups a day for 30 days?

If 100 a day fits your level, you will most likely see more reps on a retest, better push-up endurance and some strength gains. Visible muscle growth is usually limited in a month, especially once 100 reps become easy. The other result is the habit: 30 days of keeping your word.

Is 100 push-ups a day too much?

It depends on your max. 100 a day is about two to three times the max of a man who can do 35 to 50 in a row. If your max is lower, start at two to three times your max and build up. Stop if you feel sharp pain in a joint.

Will 100 push-ups a day build muscle?

It can at first, while the sets are hard for you. Studies show push-ups can build strength and muscle comparably to the bench press when the effort is matched. Once 100 reps feel easy, make the push-ups harder rather than adding more easy reps.

How should I split 100 push-ups a day?

Use sets you can finish with two or three reps in reserve: 4 × 25 or 5 × 20 if your max is 35 to 49, 2 × 50 or 3 × 35 if it is over 50, or 10 × 10 spread through a busy day.

Should I take rest days during a 100 push-ups a day challenge?

Yes. Plan at least one full rest day a week with zero push-ups, and take an extra one if soreness does not fade overnight. In GLADIUS, you can take up to 2 rest days in any rolling 7 days without losing your streak.

How long does it take to work up to 100 push-ups a day?

With GLADIUS, your daily target grows 1% each day you hit it. From 60 a day, that is about 52 successful days to reach 100; from 50, about 70. Slow enough to protect your joints, fast enough to see progress every week.
